Sleep Apnea Prevention Starts in Childhood

Sleep apnea is a dangerous sleep disorder. When left untreated it leads to periods of interrupted breathing during sleep that can leave the brain oxygen deprived and contribute to the following conditions:

  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Depression
  • Heart attack, heart failure, or irregular heart beat
  • Diabetes
  • Headaches
  • Accidents due to lack of sleep

Here, at KN Dentistry, in addition to dental care we provide sleep apnea evaluations for our patients with concerns that their sleep may not be healthy. When appropriate, they are referred for sleep studies and medical evaluations, but in many cases we are able to help them with a sleep apnea device.

What most people don’t realize is that sleep apnea can often be prevented. We evaluate children as young as toddlers for development of the arches, size of adenoids, tonsils, and other issues that may lead to future breathing problems.

If we catch it early enough, we can help the child have full skeletal development that will minimize breathing issues as an adult and help prevent sleep apnea.

Our goal is to bring awareness to this issue and the possibility of preventing adult breathing problems while our children are young.

Sleep apnea can be deadly and we can do something about it.

If you are interested in being screened for sleep apnea or having your children evaluated for potential breathing problems, please call and set up an appointment.

We look forward to seeing you soon.
