How to Prevent Toothbrush Virus Transmission

It’s that time of year! Kids are going back to school and viruses like colds, flu and Covid will be trying to work their way into our homes again. It’s important to do what you can to help prevent them.

Two of the most powerful virus prevention habits you and your family can adopt are washing your hands frequently and sneezing or coughing into your arm. Reminding your family to do these can help keep them (and you) healthy this season.

Toothbrushes can also become contaminated with viruses and bacteria. To prevent them from spreading sickness from one family member to another, we recommend:

  • Storing family toothbrushes in a way that prevents them from touching each other
  • Cleaning and disinfecting toothbrushes with peroxide or mouthwash on a regular basis
  • Providing new toothbrushes for anyone who was sick as soon as they recover
  • Cleaning and disinfecting toothbrush storage containers regularly
  • Getting each family member their own tube of toothpaste and floss or reminding them not to touch the tube directly with their brush

Most importantly, keep smiling. Smiling can increase your immunity!

We hope you and your family stay healthy and happy throughout cold and flu season. Don’t forget to schedule your regular dental appointments to keep your smile happy too!
