Summer brings sunshine, vacations, and more time outdoors, but it can also bring unexpected risks to your oral health. Whether you're headed to the beach, enjoying sports, or sipping cool drinks by the pool, it's important to protect your smile all season long. Here are our top tips for keeping your teeth safe and healthy this summer:
Watch Out for Pool Water - Swimming in pools with high chlorine levels can erode tooth enamel over time. If you own a pool, it’s important to keep the PH levels balanced to protect your family’s smiles. It’s also good to encourage swimmers to swish their mouths with water when they come out of the pool to minimize risk to their tooth enamel.
Be Careful with Summer Snacks and Drink Choices – Like pool water many summer drinks are highly acidic and they may also contain extra sugar. Sweet summer snacks are often high in sugar as well. This can be dangerous for your teeth and your health. Instead, choose healthy, low sugar, foods and drinks that can taste great and be healthy too.
Don’t Forget to Pack Your Dental Care Essentials - Don’t leave your dental hygiene behind when you go on vacation. Bring a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss to keep up your oral care routine while you're away. It only takes a few days of missed brushing and flossing for plaque to build up.
Protect Your Lips with SPF – Your lips are very vulnerable to the sun and skin cancer. We recommend using a balm or other lip product with at least SPF 15 throughout the year.
Schedule a Summer Checkup - The slower pace of summer is a perfect time to schedule a dental cleaning, checkup or recommended treatment. It’s especially helpful for kids who are out of school and due for back-to-school exams. Catching issues early helps prevent bigger problems later in the year.
Enjoy Your Summer!
Whether you're staying close to home or going on vacation, these tips can keep your teeth bright and strong all summer long.
