Dental Anxiety Is Real and We’re Here to Help

If the thought of going to the dentist makes you nervous, you’re not alone. Dental anxiety is very real, and it’s more common than you think. For some people, even scheduling an appointment can cause stress. Others may feel anxious about the sounds, smells, injections, or simply not knowing what to expect.

The good news is that you don’t have to let dental anxiety keep you from taking care of your smile. Our dental team is here to help you feel comfortable, informed, and in control.

Why Do People Experience Dental Anxiety?

There are many reasons someone may feel nervous about dental care. Sometimes anxiety comes from a previous stressful experience, or it may be related to something specific like sensitive teeth, fear of needles, being unable to communicate during treatment or feeling a lack of control.

Some people may also feel embarrassed about the condition of their teeth, especially if they haven't been to the dentist for several years.  It's important to remember that our goal is to help, not judge, and one of the best things you can do is let us know how you're feeling.

You don't have to wait until you're sitting in our office either; you can let us know when you schedule your appointment. This will allow us to prepare and be ready to provide the best care possible.

What Can We Do to Make Your Visit More Comfortable?

Every patient is different, so we take a personalized approach to dental anxiety. Depending on your needs and the type of treatment you're receiving, our goal is to:

  • Listen carefully and compassionately
  • Create a calm and supportive environment
  • Provide simple comforts like headphones, blankets and more
  • Explain each step of your treatment before we begin
  • Answer your questions and address your concerns
  • Take breaks when you need them
  • Use a simple hand signal so you can communicate during treatment
  • Discuss ways to minimize anxiety, discomfort and sensitivity
  • Do everything we can to ensure your comfort during treatment

Don't Let Fear Keep You From Getting the Care You Need

Avoiding the dentist because of anxiety can create a frustrating cycle. Small dental problems can be handled more easily and usually cost less. But when they have time to get worse, treatment can become more complicated, expensive and reinforce your worst-case scenario fears.

Regular preventive visits help us prevent or identify problems early when your dental treatment can be simple, fast and less stressful. Over time, many of our fearful clients have become our biggest fans.

If it has been a long time since your last dental appointment, please don't be embarrassed. You won't be the first person we've seen who has delayed dental care because of fear or anxiety, and you certainly won't be the last.

You Deserve a Dental Experience That Feels Comfortable and Respectful

Dental anxiety doesn't mean you're difficult or challenging to work with. We all have things that make us anxious and for you it just happens to be dentistry. It simply means you have a concern that deserves to be taken seriously.

Our team wants you to feel heard, respected, and comfortable throughout your dental experience. We are happy to talk with you about your concerns and find ways to make your visit easier.

If dental anxiety has been keeping you from the care you need, don't let fear stand between you and a healthy smile. Contact our office today. Let's talk about your concerns and find an approach that will work for you.
