How to Calm Your Gag Reflex During Dental Treatment

If you gag easily you may feel anxious about dental appointments or try to avoid them completely. But, trying to dodge the dentist only results in unhealthy and unsightly teeth with more dental needs later.

We care about you and your ability to have a comfortable visit in our office. Gagging is not something to be embarrassed about and we will never think less of you for it. Over the years we have learned ways to support you and there are also some things you can try to help your appointments go smoothly.

  • Choose afternoon appointments
  • Breathe through your nose
  • Use throat numbing or snoring spray
  • Try relaxation techniques
  • Consider sedation dentistry
  • Listen to music through headphones
  • Hold one foot up in the air and focus on keeping it there
  • Hum when you feel the urge to gag
  • Make a fist with your thumb in the middle and squeeze
  • Choose a dentist you trust and talk to them about your concerns

If you need a little extra gentleness and understanding with your dental care, give us a call. We promise to take great care of you.
