Autoimmune Conditions and Oral Health

Autoimmune diseases are complex conditions in which the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own cells, tissues, or organs. While genetics may be a factor there is usually a trigger that makes the disease become active. The most common triggers are environmental, trauma, chemical, illness or lifestyle, although the possibilities are endless.

Inflammation is also commonly linked with autoimmune conditions and one of the common sources of chronic inflammation in your body is poor oral health. Your mouth is home to millions of microorganisms, including bacteria that can get into your blood stream when you swallow. Maintaining a healthy microbiome in your mouth is important for your overall health too.

Periodontal gum disease is one of the biggest contributors to oral inflammation but any infection, irritation or lack of dental care can contribute. This is why brushing, flossing and regular dental cleaning and exams are so important.

While autoimmune disorders can affect nearly every part of the body, their impact on oral health is often overlooked. Understanding this connection can help you take proactive steps to protect your teeth, gums, and overall well-being.

Common Autoimmune Conditions That Affect Oral Health

Sjögren’s Syndrome
This condition primarily targets the glands that produce saliva and tears, leading to chronic dry mouth and dry eyes. Without adequate saliva, the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and oral infections increases significantly.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)
Known for causing joint inflammation, RA can also impact the jaw joint(temporomandibular joint or TMJ), leading to pain, reduced mobility, and difficulty chewing.

Lupus
Lupus can cause painful sores and lesions inside the mouth, particularly on the roof of the mouth, lips, and cheeks.

Celiac Disease
While primarily affecting the digestive system, celiac disease can also manifest in the mouth. Patients may experience damaged enamel, canker sores, and a dry, burning sensation.

How to Protect Your Oral Health if You Have an Autoimmune Condition

  • Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene: Brush twice a day and floss daily to reduce plaque and gum inflammation.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to prevent dry mouth and consider sugar-free lozenges or saliva substitutes if needed.
  • Regular Dental Check-ups: Visit your dentist regularly to catch potential problems early and minimize risks. Be sure to keep us informed about your medical conditions.
  • Manage Inflammation: Work closely with your healthcare team to keep your autoimmune condition under control.

Living with an autoimmune disease can present unique challenges for oral health and oral health issues can make it more difficult to manage autoimmunity. But with proper care and awareness, you can take proactive steps to protect your smile and overall well-being.
