A Mother’s Smile: Special Oral Health Tips for Moms

Mothers have a special place in our hearts. They not only have the amazing ability to carry and birth children but are also often at the heart of their families. What we have noticed though is that many moms are so busy taking care of everyone else that they forget to take care of themselves. Meanwhile, the very things that give you the gift of womanhood can also create unique oral health needs.

Hormones play a powerful role in shaping many aspects of women’s health, and your mouth is no exception. Understanding the impact of hormonal changes can help you stay one step ahead of problems and protect your smile through every stage of life.

Here’s what you need to know:

Menstrual Cycles: Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone can cause your gums to feel tender, irritated or even bleed. You may also be more prone to canker sores at this time of the month. Maintaining gentle, effective oral health care during this time is important as always, and the symptoms tend to go away shortly after your period has started.

Pregnancy: Up to 75% of pregnant women develop gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums that often develops into periodontal(gum) disease. It’s important you know that studies have linked gum disease during pregnancy with premature birth or low birth weight babies, and we encourage you to contact us right away if your gums are tender or inflamed.

Hormone Based Birth Control: While more recent forms of this type of birth control have lower hormone levels, itis still important to take extra care with your gums to prevent hormonal gingivitis. It is also important to keep in mind that some antibiotics can suppress the effectiveness of birth control pills so you may want to take extra precautions if you are on them.

Menopause – As estrogen levels drop, many women experience dry mouth, burning sensations, or even a change in taste. Less saliva can also increase the risk of cavities, gum disease, and oral infections so it’s not just an issue of comfort. Lower estrogen may diminish the strength of your bones including your jaw and teeth, putting you at a higher risk for jaw problems or tooth loss. It is also important you keep us informed of any changes in your medical health or new medications so that we take them into consideration when caring for your mouth.

In all phases of your life and different levels of hormone balance, the important thing for you to remember is the value of focusing on your oral health with regular brushing, flossing and dental visits.

If you do not already have a happy dental home, where your unique concerns are understood, give us a call. We promise to take great care of you.
